Bright Ideas For Keeping Your Home Safe And Secure During the Holiday Season

While you're busy having fun with family and friends this holiday season, remember that criminals love the holiday season as much as everyone else—especially, says the National Crime Prevention Council, because there are more people shopping and traveling at this time of year. To make sure your holidays are happy and crime-free, keep in mind these common-sense tips for securing your home:

  • Make your home look as lived-in as possible while you're gone.
  • Lock your doors and windows while out shopping or visiting friends and family. Close to 60% of all burglaries show no sign of forced entry. Avoid the temptation to leave a house key hidden in an obvious place outside your home.
  • Use automatic timers to turn on a radio and lights at different intervals to hide the fact that you are not at home.
  • Take a home inventory by taking photographs and make a list with serial numbers so that if you should be burglarized, recovered items can be identified and insurance claims are easier to file.
  • Stop your mail, newspaper and all other regular deliveries if you plan to be away longer than a day or two.
  • Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home while you are away and be sure to leave an emergency phone number.
  • Arrange to have your yard maintained if necessary.
  • If you're out for the evening, turn on lights and a radio or television so it looks like someone is home.

By investing a little time and effort into securing your home, you can rest easy while you're away--and return to find your home sweet home just the way you left it.

Four Ways To Save On Insurance Premiums
Home insurance rates have been rising the past few years. Here’s what you can do to minimize your premiums:
  1. Maintain your home. Take care of small problems before they can become costly repairs.
  2. Increase your deductible. Be willing to pay $1,000 out-of-pocket instead of only $500 can drop your premium by as much as 15%.
  3. Think twice about small claims. The more claims you make, the higher your premium will go. Keep the numbers down by paying out-of-pocket for smaller problems this year.
  4. Check the home’s insurance history before you purchase to find out whether the property or area is prone to problems.

Tips To Make Your Holiday Guests Happy

Help your holiday guests feel at home with these simple tips gathered from various organizing gurus:

Before they arrive:

  • Ask if there are any special requests or needs (i.e. food allergies to be sensitive to).
  • Make sure the guest room or sleeping area is clean and neat. Have extra pillows and blankets on hand, and make space in drawers and closets for their clothing.
  • Let guests know what to expect weather-wise in your area so they can pack accordingly. If you're planning special activities (hiking, biking, etc.), make sure your guests are prepared.
  • If you're going to be ferrying guests around town, make sure your car is clean and has room for everyone. If small children will be along for the ride, ask your guests if they will be bringing their own car seat or if you'll need to provide one.

Upon arrival:

  • Have refreshments ready.
  • Show your guests to their room and let them know where they can find clean towels, soap, shampoo, etc. (It's nice to have extra toiletries such as toothbrushes and toothpaste on hand for those who forget them.)
  • Explain any "house rules" about pets, children, etc.
  • Show your guests how to adjust the heating or air conditioning system and make sure they know how to operate the security system if necessary.
  • Offer maps, brochures and information on local attractions (hours, directions, admission fees, etc.) and recommendations for area restaurants.
